Glass: Weihenstephan weizen glass
This goes into the category along with Weihenstephan's version as one of the best in the style: balanced characters of bread, fruit, and phenolics with some unknown compounds adding pleasant complexity. The mouthfeel is completely of soft, smooth foam that makes this an exceptionally easy-drinking beer as well. If this were available in my region, I'd purchase more bottles soon, it's that good.
Pours a tall, >3cm, mass of slightly off-white foam, made up of small-sized bubbles, yielding a frothy appearance. Retention is somewhat above average, the head falling to a thin cap atop the body of the beer within about two minutes. Lacing is modest, with some scattered dots and lines clinging to the walls of the glass. Body is a dark golden yellow color, with light bringing out pale golden yellow hues. Carbonation visible through the nearly opaque (90% opacity) body, fairly numerous and active.
Aroma is rich and hearty, very nice combination of fresh wheat bread, banana ester, bubblegum, vanilla, and a background of spicy nutmeg-like phenolics.
Overall flavor is of hearty wheat bread with strong banana ester and moderate phenolic undertones, with lesser flavors of vanilla, yeast, bubblegum, cracker, and coconut. Front of palate tastes spicy phenolics balanced by ripe banana esters, wheat bread, and a bit of yeast. Mid-palate of balanced wheat bread, strong ripe banana ester, clove phenolics, yeast, vanilla, and a bit of coconut. Back of palate tastes heavy wheat bread, pale malt sweetness, strong banana ester, slight bubblegum and vanilla, with light and spicy phenolics being present in the background. Aftertaste of hearty wheat bread with a ripe banana ester and a bit of cracker and coconut.
Beer is medium to medium-light in body, with carbonation of medium-low intensity, leading to a mostly foamy (4/5) and slightly smooth (1/5) mouthfeel that is perfect for this beer and within style guidelines. Closes dry, as expected for the style, with moderate stickiness clinging to the palate.
