This Kölsch-style beer is handcrafted in small batches in the tradition of the top-fermented “white” beers of Cologne, home of our head brewer Uli. A hybrid between ale and lager, it is based on a 100-year old recipe that Uli brought with him to Suffolk. A bit hazy in appearance, it is crisp and light. The name Rut & Wiess (Red & White) comes from the colours of the coat of arms of Cologne.

500ml bottle. Bought from the brewery stall at Wapping Docklands Market.
L: Beautiful hazy pale orange with one finger of creamy white head.
S: Very light.
T: Light caramel plus banana esters and an edge of orange zest. Gentle bitterness that builds over time.
F: Medium body with a soft, almost oily mouthfeel. Very dry finish and moderately gassy.
O: Another excellent German-style beer from a German expat now living in England. Has many characteristics of a wheat beer (including wheat in the grain bill) for what is labelled as a kölsch. Refreshing and flavourful.
