650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Deep brown. Small khaki head. Medium collar.

Smell - Bourbon. Deep caramel. Milk chocolate. Banana, but not a phenolic aroma.

Taste - Strong bourbon and a little bit of that banana. Lots of oak. Oak becomes very intense, actually. Chocolatey.

Mouthfeel - Very oaky. A little boozy. Medium low carbonation.

Overall - The banana fruity element adds a nice dimension, but otherwise it's totally dominated by the barrel.

notes from my review, enjoyed on the super bowl.

Aroma is high in bourbon and light vanilla and oak. Sweetness is composed of light brown sugar, and light caramel. Faint roast.

Medium high bourbon, chocolate, light roast, soft caramel. Medium molasses like sweetness. Medium light earthy hop bitterness. Finishes moderately sweet, with a strong, lingering bourbon aftertaste. Medium alcohol, little hot. Would do well w a few months on it - bummer I only have one.

Medium mouthfeel, medium carbonation. Alcohol warmth is moderate.

This was a nice showcase of what a barrel can do to a beer. I've had the regular base beer many times, so the barrel and bourbon qualities really stood out, in a complimentary and interesting way. The bourbon and alcohol characteristics were quite high. If I have it again with some age on it, I would love to see the bourbon come down a bit, oak to pop more and the alcohol warmth to subside a bit. Solid, flavorful, tasty barrel aged treatment for an already fabulous beer.

(A)- Pours a murky burnt sienna color. Minimal froth and lacing.

(S)- Nice bits of vanilla and caramel with a big showing of bourbon oak. Subtle raisin in the background.

(T)- Again, strong barrel notes in this. Big bits of vanilla and raisin.

(M)- A good carbonation level. This really showcases the bourbon barrel with the base beer taking back stage. What makes it is despite its big showing of the bourbon oak, it sits perfectly at only 7%ABV, so no booze burn.

(O)- I like this. A solid take on barrel aging the style and surprisingly drinkable too.

Had on tap at the brewery.
A: Pours brown with little head.

S: Bourbon and roasted malt.

T: Very nice bourbon and malt upfront followed by light coffee and a hint of vanilla. Small amount of hop bitterness in the finish. The initial taste of this is very good, but it thins out way to quickly.

M: Thin for the style and below average carbonation.

O: If it did'nt thin out so fast, this could be a very good beer.

Pours an opaque black with very little tan head. The nose is faint with the bourbon and wood forward, some sweet dark fruits and light chocolate cake. The flavor is more rich in chocolate cake, the bourbon is soft and nicely integrated, but the finish is thin and a bit empty. The body isn't bold enough to hold the barrel age but the favors are quite nice until they thin out.

On-tap at FoBAB 2011. Served in the taster pint glass. I've had this a few times before, but I've never taken the time to write any notes.

A - Thin head settles to a thick dark tan collar, leaving behind some wisps on top, but no lacework. Vaguely transparent dark brown body.

S - Plenty of bourbon and Woodford barrel presence, with plenty of vanilla and a touch of coconut. The milk chocolate and molasses of the base beer manage to shine through, even though Pullman Brown isn't the biggest beer.

T - The flavor is unfortunately not nearly as interesting. A bit watery and understated, with notes of chocolate and vanilla dominating.

M - Somewhat thin medium-light body. Low carbonation, with a dry tannic finish, and only minimal alcohol warmth.

D - The smell is delicious, but otherwise this brew (or at least this vintage) is somewhat underwhelming. The base beer is fairly light, so maybe this needed less time in the barrels. Would re-visit if I saw it on-tap at Flossmoor in the future.

Dark impenetrable beer with minimal head. Nose has a deep malt with an over the top bourbon from the barrel aging. Good but unbalanced?

Not in the flavor, a robust porter with a good bourbon note, a sweetish finish, and well balanced by a hop note. This is a keeper.

Heavy, silky, smooth, just right. Only downside is the over the top nose but beyond that it's a great beer. Reported at 7% abv at the October Goose Island tasting.
