This beer is really hard to rate, because it's stranger than anything I (and I'd bet most BA'ers) have ever tried. I'm doing my best to rate it here based on the merits of what it's trying to do.

It's important to note first that this beer is fashioned after absinthe, and it's brewed with wormwood, anise pods, and fennel seeds, and it's *extremely bitter.*

Tried on-tap at the brewery.

Appearance: Yellow-gold, with no head or lacing.

Smell: Almost exactly like flat root beer (there's no carb to tickle the nose).

Taste: Intense, surprising bitterness, which is immensely at odds with the smell of this beer. The anise and wormwood contribute heavily to the bitter, woody wet-earth taste here. (You can also apparently ask the brewers to give you a sugar cube to toss into your glass to make this beer more friendly, but I didn't try this option.)

Mouthfeel: Thin and light with little-to-no carb. I think more carb would help a lot in boosting people's perceptions of this beer, but I won't rate this too low, since I can't help but think that's what the brewers were going for.

Overall: This beer punches you in the mouth and doesn't apologize for it. It's bold and daring and really takes some getting used to, but if you're willing to keep your palate and your expectations open, you'll be rewarded by a beer-tasting experience unlike any other. This beer is weird as hell, but it's worth trying for as an interesting representation of an old style.
