English Maris Otter base malt with small parts of a dark crystal, caramel aromatic, and special x specialty malts round out the base of this nearly 2 year old Barleywine, barreled in fresh Templeton Rye Whiskey casks Nov 20 2020. Very well aged to a rich depth of cacao, raisin, & baker's chocolate that lead into a deep charred American oak, finishing sweet with a pleasant rye spice.

Pours black with two fingers of off-white foam. Aroma is sticky raisins, grapes, caramel, and toffee. Minor herbal hops add some sharpness to contrast the firm toasty, bready, and caramely malts underneath. Rich rye whiskey brings a rise of spiciness (mild) and char to conclude the aroma. Flavor profile dips into all the sugary notes of a barleywine, hitting notes of raisin, fig, and toffee. Rye whiskey is just behind, adding a light swell of oomph without the excessive heat. As the beer warms, this swell of rye starts to develop a little more heat and spiciness. Toasty and bready malts sit underneath it all. Mouth feel is medium-thick with a really fuzzy, velvety texture throughout. It's consistent. Overall, really endearing. Rye whiskey compliments this barleywine well, giving it a big, but not overly boozy, drinking experience.
