Pours a light orange. More malt on the aroma than any hops coming through. Nice amount of bitterness expected of this style and it finishes smooth. A nice beer.

A pint of Mattock "West Coast" IPA sampled at the brewery on 30 July. A pleasant sunny afternoon spent at a picnic table looking out on what remains of rural Long Island might have influenced my appraisal of this beer. This beer has a copper color; the head is slightly tan. The Mattock is a very solid beer, providing a lively mouthful. The taste is balanced and has an attractive aftertaste. I think this is less hoppy than I would expect from a west coast IPA: maybe a mid-west IPA? I'd like to compare it to a British ESB, but this has a little more oomph than that. Get a taste at the brewery and try for yourself.
