I enjoy coming across beers that I have yet to learn where they are on the map; I know this is from New Mexico, but I had to find out where. After consulting the map, I learned they are near the border of Texas in the panhandle. The town is small, and I am hoping for a tasty brew. I am using a Weizen glass and served this beer at 42 degrees. A semi-hard pour created a frothy and foamy two-fingered white head. The beer's head retention is average, and the slow dissipation left no lacing on the glass. I am charting the color around SRM 6, a golden yellow with light amber hues. The clarity is clear with some carbonation bubbles. The appearance is average for this style.
Nosing the glass, I smell bananas, cloves, toasted malts, and wheat. Smelling the glass again, I picked up earthy notes, yeasty phenols, honey, bubblegum, and floral blossoms. The malt complex is doughy, light-toasted malts and wheat. The beer smells like a Hefeweizen.
The malt backbone is firm, with a heavy wheat note and doughy and toasted malts. However, the yeast profile is overloaded with bubblegum, and it feels like I am chewing Big League Chew. Other flavors in the beer are banana, cloves, white pepper, and honey.
The mouthfeel is creamy, finishing smooth. The body is medium and has medium carbonation.
The heavy bubble flavor makes it difficult to enjoy. Although the beer is a hefe, I am still determining how one flavor aspect is out of balance. Everything else about the beer falls within the style guidelines.
