Got as part of Costco's Advent Beer Calendar 2024. Pours a nice golden color with a medium head. Aroma is mild malts & hops with a little sweetness. Taste is similar with some bitterness. Not your typical Marzen. BB 5-31-2026

Poured from an aluminum can, stored in a refrigerator at 38 degrees. The ale/beer was poured into an insulated pint glass. The beer was allowed to warm a bit before tasting it.

Smell – grassy, l
Taste – Good flavored beer consistent with its description. A nice balance dominated by
Feel – The beer was light to the taste. A bit watery. Not particularly carbonated
Overall – I enjoyed the beer and plan to buy it again.

The next German beer up for review is Rosa's Marzen. I poured the beer into my Spaten Mug at 44 degrees. The pour created a creamy, foamy, three-fingered, white head with average retention. The somewhat slow dissipation left bits of lacing on the glass. After the dissipation, a foam layer shrouded the liquid. What immediately caught my attention was the unexpected color of the beer. It is not the typical Marzen color; it is far lighter than expected, closer to a Pilsner than a Fest beer. The color charts at SRM 4 are pale straw with light golden hues and cloudy. As I recall, this is the first Marzen I have rated the SRM this low.
The aromas are not the usual caramel and bready notes that one would associate with this style. The first nosing of the glass, I smell crackers, lightly toasted bread crust, light malty sweetness, and doughy. The hops have more spicy floral esters with white pepper and a smidge of herbal. Other aromas I noticed are earthy and light yeasty phenols, like medicinal. This beer does not have banana or clove aromas like the last two I have tried.
The flavors are peculiar. It starts with notes of lemon, musty basements, crackers, lightly toasted cereal grains, and bay leaves. Sipping the glass again, I taste white pepper, floral blossoms, band-aids, lightly toasted bread crust, and doughy. Lastly, I taste a bit of sulfur, minerals, and dirt.
The mouthfeel is creamy, finishing carbonic. The body is light, and the carbonation is medium-high.
As I savor Rosa's Marzen, I can't help but feel a tinge of disappointment. This beer, while unique in its own right, deviates significantly from the lovely Marzen I love to sip on during the fall and the start of the winter. It's a different style altogether, more akin to a bastardized Pilsner. I agree with the last reviewer; this is not the Marzen I was hoping for, and it's certainly not the best of the twelve.

Pours clear, straw yellow in color with one inch head. Taste is mineral, toasted bread, and storefront. Very light body, high carbonation, slightly bitter. Classic but not one of my favorites in the 12 pack. Worth a shot though....but the body is way light.
