For this Modern Autumnal Ale we collaborated with our friend, Ashley Rodriguez. Her new book, Field Notes from a Fungi Forager, explores the beauty of mushrooms through her unique lens as a forager and a forest therapy guide. This beer would be a perfect foraging accompaniment, or for sipping while you flip through her book and listen to birdsong.

they pimp the mushroom branding on this can hard enough to have me looking for it in the beer, and while it hits maple and candy cap mushroom-like, it seems to just sort of be an amber, albeit a kind of fermentation driven one, not too sweet, with all the richness you expect from something dubbed an autumn ale. fine color, luster, whatever, it just looks like an amber, although well headed and sudsy. the aroma and sweet, muted, toffee driven, and has a kilned richness to it, although if i make it so in my mind i can also get some actual mushroom umami, soy, acorn, chestnut, all the fall things. its light in body for the color and style but has a nice frothy refinement too, english somewhere, not sure i totally agree with the reviewer calling this standard issue, its not exotic, nobody would claim that, but its not run of the mill. maple and bakery floor, mushroom if i let it be, the art just begs the drinker for that, middle body, lingering longer boiled heft, detail oriented beer that just drinks, no hops at all, tree bar and that underlayer, i really dig it. a style thats hard to stand out in, but this does that, label reads organic but the liquid does too, an enjoyable pour from a brewery i need to spend more time on...

Clear handsome auburn color with plenty of foam in the Blanche de Chambly gobet. They call this "Autumnal Ale" but it's the standard-issue bitter and barky Amber Ale. There's a slight bit of sweet malt to start, but it gets darkly bitter, woody, and astringent before long. I am not sure what the attraction is. Maybe the slightly roasted aroma. Otherwise it's, well, I've said it all. From the 16 oz can purchased at Elizabeth Station. Not seeing a date.

Deep brown. Lovely smell of noble hops. Taste has a lot on the extreme top end, with some malt and nut flavor. Unusual for a red ale. Bitter herb flavor dominates. Somewhat sharp texture.

Pours beautifully red with a gigantic head of poppyseed sized and smaller bubbles. It has a plum and faint molasses taste with a light bitterness like you get near the seed of a red stone fruit and a bit of pine. They call it an Autumnal Ale, but it strongly reminds me of an Irish red ale as they taste off tap in Ireland. No over hopping like American or NW reds. Need to have this one again to pay closer attention to it's lovely details.
