to be fair, this got lost in the beer fridge and is now appears to be two years old, so that its marginally infected and pretty gross may be partially on us, but its hard to see this being awesome, even at its full potential and even with some very favorable reviews here, definitely not a stout for aging. looks a little thin from the can for being on the stronger side, some slickness to it, low shine, short mocha colored head, just a bit of viscosity and some legs on it, teasing its prominent residual sweetness. the aroma is butterscotch for sure, but its forced, totally over the top, in front of roast and coffee notes of the base beer, and there is an appreciable tang to this now, a lactic thing happening, definitely not intentional, but it hasnt totally broken this down, even without this element its proportions are off, way too much of the butterscotch, makes it seem totally unnatural, whatever was used in here. the flavor starts off with some promise, i get nice dark roasted barley and accompanying bitterness set against caramelized sugar and a kiss of vanilla, butterscotch ice cream, caramel sauce, brown sugar, and the fake maple syrup, lightly warm alcohol, and even a contribution from the oats adding some grain depth to this that is a nice feature, and most of this is there the whole way, butterscotch driving but more balanced than in the nose, still overt, but before long the pucker comes in, which just doesnt fit, obviously this probably wasnt there when it was canned, it tastes worse than the scores i am giving here, affording some grace since the age is on me (and my friends), but beers dont get infected unless the seeds of infection are there when its packaged, so even if it wasnt appreciable when it was first made, it was there, just saying. i think the concept is original enough and sounds appealing, i like the robust oat aspect and the abv on this, but at the least its overdosed on the butterscotch, and it has some quality issues. the up and down with their beers continues...

Dark in color with nice foam. The butterscotch is sweet but not too much so. Has that "belly warmer" feel as it goes down. Great drinking during cold weather by a fire. I wish the ABV was lower but it's still a very good beer.
