Driving past, I saw the wacky purple sign from the road and stopped. After just leaving Racine Brewing, feeling bummed it was unexpectedly closed until the end of the month (edit: now closed permanently, RIP) and lucked out finding 1ofUs completely by accident. From the front it didn't look open yet, but there was a patio bar in back with people milling around, so we pulled off and backtracked along the frontage road. Somehow we had randomly stumbled upon a brand new brewery in "soft opening mode". Score!
The concept of the brewery is unorthodox to say the least. About 10 people collectively run the brewery. They met at a local brewery in Kenosha, and i'm assuming some of them were already homebrewers. The head brewer is 22. All of this I learned after the fact, reading up on the place. The guys working were friendly and there was a small crowd there enjoying their brews in the shade. I was told they are canning at Public in Kenosha for now, as they finish up the plumbing in the brewery and get the taproom ready to open later this year.
From the outdoor patio bar they had about 8 of their beers available, with a few guests as well. Several taps but only their APA was currently flowing, which they offered samples of.
Beers run the gamut, I had their American pilsner and APA, both were solid. They seem to straddle both old school and new school, serving both hazy/milkshake IPA's and classic styles like APA, Amber, and Hefeweizen. I left with a mixed "dealers choice" 4-pack, and found out later these beers were pretty hit or miss quality wise. The highlight was a 4-pack of "Biller Mudd" a tasty pilsner hopped with Mosaic & Cascade. The label puts Joe Dirt to shame. Seems like they have their core beers established already, hoping once the taproom opens they plan to rotate one-offs and specialty beers.
Overall it was a positive experience, it seems like they have a unique concept. Time will tell once they are fully up and running, will check out the taproom in the future.
2022 update: Taproom finally opened in October.
