Excited to try this new, local BA Imperial Stout. Purchased at Freeman’s in OKC on 03/20/2026.
Look - it’s the right color; deep, dark brown. Had no head upon pour, but maintains a very thin ring and leaves quickly receding lacing.
Smell - almost all I smell is bourbon, with a faint hint of the typical BA AIS (coffee, chocolate, dark fruit and unidentified sweetness. I’m a little apprehensive with the level of bourbon I’m smelling…I’m a stout guy, not a bourbon guy. We shall see.
Taste - I am pleasantly surprised. It does have a smoky bourbon taste but it meshes well with the thick, chocolatey imperial stout taste. A little non-descript dark fruit…plum or raisin maybe? It is great.
Feel - not much carbonation, as expected; however, it has an almost perfect level of thickness that makes this beer very drinkable. I am impressed by the mouthfeel, as I was with the taste; the strong bourbon smell, for some reason in my mind, made me think this was going to be very thin. Instead, it has the perfect level of thickness. Reminds me of my wife.
Overall - it is great, but I wouldn’t pay the $25 for a 16.9 fl oz bottle again. The Goose Island Bourbon County Imperial Stout is much better at a better price point. However, happy to see that local brewers other than Prairie are brewing some high-quality imperial stouts.

Pours an effervescent cola color with fast-falling mocha colored head. Viscous as hell, zero head retention & lacing
S: Bourbon, vanilla, figs & dark cherry brandy. Nose falls off a bit at the close
T: Follows the nose with a strong brown sugar, dark chocolate & cola presence, plenty of barrel/booze & leafy hops up front. Oaky, tons of dark chocolate, vanilla, plus figs, leafy hops, maple candy & Bourbon as this beer warms up. Finishes with plenty of barrel, some vanilla, maple, figs & leafy hops. Some dark Choclate on the fringes
MF: Medium/chewy body, dialed back carbonation, plenty warming, carbonation picks up a little once warm
Great take on a style that I really dig. I will be back for next year's version if possible. A bit boozy but this what you suspect & even get mad if it isn't. Verge of greatness
