This one has the color of old copper with ruddy brown highlights (SRM 17-19). One inch of light chestnut froth is short lived, leaving no lace on a Spaten dimpled mug.
Oh wow! The aromatic richness in this beer is unique for a Marzen. It has spiciness similar to brouleéd sugar with roasted malt. These are nothing like a porter or a stout, yet they are still far more than the toasted malts expected from this style.
The malt profile follows the nose, however without the spiciness. The sweet/bitter balance is well done, with neither taking the lead. The flavor emphasized cashews, peanuts, and hazelnuts over the grains. There is a brief and subtle finish.
Soft prickly carbonation helps to wash away faint astringency. The medium body and almost oily texture act counter to light alcohol.
This was my first sample from a new brewer. Oktoberfest beers tend to be favorable to mass market beer consumption. This, however, is fresh and quite flavorful, demonstrating the delicate and perishable nature of these beers.
