Can picked up from the brewery during this years' edition of the Realist Party. One off with one of the most obscure Star Trek references I've seen on a beer. Wesley Crusher would be proud.

Poured into a Welly nonic. Hazy honey-orange in colour, just a mild touch of sediment. Half inch of foam, recedes into a fine ring.

Nose is very sweet malt, mango, caramel, orange, west coast hops.

Very tasty brew indeed, certainly not a brew I was expecting from an English ale-focused brewery like Wellington. Sweet and quite citrussy and tropical, with a solid tangy hop finish. Immensely drinkable. I had it on cask as well at the festival and as good as that was, I'm enjoying the canned version even better.

Medium bodied, sturdy but crisp carbonation, slightly oily.

Very good double IPA that has some great flavour to it. Hop bomb, no, but certainly very tasty and with a big tropical fruit presence.

Kolvoord Hopburst Double IPA is a Welly One-Off limited edition beer released by Wellington Brewery in Guelph, Ontario on August 22, 2013.

The name comes from a Star Trek episode - a Kolvoord Starburst maneuver is a complex and dangerous aerobatic in-flight maneuver usually performed by five small spacecraft.

The beer is described by Wellington Brewery as "an unfiltered Double IPA that is guaranteed to light a vapor trail of hops in your mouth! With strong aromas of citrus and melon, this Double IPA has a very strong bitterness that is sure to set your taste buds on stun".

I first tried this beer as part of a sampling at Wellington Brewery on August 24, 2013. With an IBU of 90, it was nice and hoppy without being overpowering. The citrus taste blended well with the hops.

I purchased a can to try at home. I should have bought more.
