Rheingauer Gutsbräu "Honig Rauchbier"
,33L brown glass bottle coded "Mindestens haltbar bis 11 JUNI 2022". Sampled on 24 September 2021.
Look: The bottle clearly displays lees at the bottom and it pours a hazy golden body beneath a full head of white foam. The head retention and lacing are both very good.
Smell: Honeyish malt and smoke as expected.
Taste: It's sweet upfront with clear honey and smoke. It's balanced by a low to moderate bitterness that works well but it's rough in the finish because of the harshness of the smoke. It finishes long-lingering with smokiness.
Overall: While it's a great idea to combine honey and smoke the honey wasn't strong enough and the smokiness was just too harsh. That's not to say that the smoke was too strong, just that the smokiness itself was harsh. Perhaps the choice of wood was wrong.
