Lake Superior Smokehouse Brewpub

 

 

My wife and I stopped here to try their beers and to have a late lunch. The brewery is actually located in Harvey, just east of Marquette in the same location that was formerly occupied by Chocolay River Brewing. Not much physically has changed, but the good news is that there is a different brewer, and the beers reflect a vast improvement from the previous line-up. The long bar has plenty of seats, and booths, tables/chairs plus an overflow room provide enough seating for a crowd. Our server was very attentive, although the place wasn't busy. The vibe here is more as a restaurant than a brewpub, but it's adequate.

In order to arrive at an overall evaluation of their beers we ordered a sampler flight of 4 of the 6 in-house beers (the alcohol license here allows for guest beers). Each was brewed well to its respective style, although none were notable to be mentioned here. (Five out of six beers are 5.5% abv or less, and had plenty of flavor.) We liked the Old Foggy Red the best. The guest beers are set up on a pour-your-own system that uses a prepaid card that is purchased at the bar. There are twelve taps that include a cider and a kombucha. Hard seltzers are available in cans. The bar also serves cocktails and wines.

The food menu is typical pub grub, but it also includes barbecue (and trimmings) which I'd consider as a specialty of the house. It is very good and worth the trip here. This is definitely a place worth visiting under this new ownership.
