The brewer's daughter Marie Hausbrendel from Jakobervorstadt spoiled her guests with fresh beer as early as the Roaring Twenties. Now grandson Leopold Schwarz has dedicated his own beer to his grandmother: the new Schwarzbräu "Marie Hausbrendel" pampers with a pleasantly fresh and mature taste.

Look is an unassuming straw yellow. Slightly cloudy with some flecks floating in it.

Nose is a mild, sweet biscuit.

Taste is soft and malty with a little bit of hop flavour to round it out. Not a ton of strong flavour, but no off flavours either. Aftertaste is malty with only a little bitterness.

Feel is minimal carbonation, but still mouth watering and slightly juicy.

Doesn't make a strong impression, but is very sessionable and goes down super easy. I'd get it again, but wouldn't go out of my way for it.

12 days of Christmas #1

Aldi Australia were selling the 2023 Kalea 12 German beer pack as a Christmas special. Some exciting looking beers, all of which I've never tried. So this should be a fun 12 days.

Vessel: 500ml Pint can. All the cans in the pack are 500 ml. The label on this can is of a rather good looking fraulein holding 4 steins of beer in each hand. A good party trick by any means. Purchased as part of the Kalea Christmas 12-pack. Expiry date is March 2025.

Appearance: Poured into my Arundel Brewery Pint Glass, looking very German/European lagery. Pale Golden Blond, bubbly white head, lots of carbonation bubbles sitting on the inside of the glass. The beer isn't completely filtered and there's a nice haziness to it.

Aroma: Floral and grassy hops, bread dough, a little bit of yeast, cookie dough sweetness. Smells fresh and inviting. Once it warms up a little, I can smell a little spice, although that may be the yeast.

Taste: Sweet honey maltness in the forward of the sip, followed by a slight spicy end that finishes a little bitter. There's a creaminess to the overall body and flavour of the beer that compliments the sweetness.

Feel: Creamy mouthfeel. Not overly carbonated, decent body to the beer. Very sessionable.

Overall: A nice, clean, not too complicated, easy drinking and refreshing German beer. Very enjoyable

Schwarzbräu GmbH "Schwarzbräu GmbH"
50 cl can coded "PRO: 20/06/2022 18:35 1EX: 20/03/2024 216217". Sampled on 16 NOV 2023

Notes via stream of consciousness: This beer is already almost a year and a half old and it's still got four months to go? That's a pretty amazing thing considering that it's a helles at 4.8% ABV and was mostly likely stored warm since leaving Germany. It's poured a hazy gold body beneath a thumb's width of white foam. The haze is a little unusual but I can accept it. I'm assuming it's unfiltered but there's nothing on the label. The aroma combines sweetish, grainy, and grassy malt with some floral and subtly herbal hop character. The taste follows and although it's not exhibiting strong oxidation (paper, cardboard) there's some there affecting the malt. It's nicely balanced between malt, hop, and a moderate bitterness that brings it to a mainly dry conclusion. In the mouth it's medium bodied and crisp as expected. So what to say about this? It's certainly not bad although a fresher example would have been great. It seems it may have had a little more brightness in the past but you never know. It's OK but not great.

APPEARANCE: Clean golden amber, with a nice off-white head and limited lace.

NOSE: Malty, biscuity-bready, and a bit sweet but solid for style.

TASTE: Malty and dry, and not overly sweet. Nicely toasty and enjoyable. Traditional, faithful and a solid helles.

Murky golden body with an eggshell white head, no real lacing though. Sweet euro malt leads all aspects. Smell has background grain, lemon zest, floral hops. Taste doesn’t have grain, almost shandy sweet like with honey added. Feel is malty, smooth but light and thin, esters textures

Poured from a can.

Appearance - Clear yellow body with some bubbles for a head that disappear quickly after pouring.
Smell - Honey, malts, grains, grassy/ earthy
Taste - Some grains, finishes with alcohol taste
Feel - High carbonation, lighter body
Overall - Not entirely impressed, nose was nice but the taste was a let down overall. Easy to drink but nothing exciting in my opinion.

Pours a rich yellow, with minimal head. Smell is equal parts malty and herbal/grassy hops. Taste favors the malt, making this malty for a Helles, though the hops are present, especially in the finish. Moderate carbonation persists until I reach the bottom of the glass. All in all, a very nice Helles, a touch malt forward for the standard, but much to my taste.
