Pours very dark brown with cola highlights. A shallow, quarter inch, rocky head is off-white and quickly forms a veil surrounded by a ring. (SRM 33-35). A maze of fine lace forms one the pilsner glass.
The aroma is sweet with low roasted malt, both are very present. Coffee grinds mix with ester alcohol late and light. These build with warmth, while the ester turns to fusile as it continues to warm. Warmth significantly diminishes the aroma.
The flavor has the roasted malt found in the aroma. The balance between bitterness and sweetness is modest. There is a light sourness, similar to that found in milk chocolate, however, there is no chocolate flavor. The finish is long and modest, with sweetness and faint sourness. As it warms, the finish becomes very unpleasant.
Alcohol is more persistent than expected. The medium body works with a slick texture and light to medium carbonation. Light astringency gives way to a high mineral feeling.
In my opinion, this beer is a mess and a miss. Not only does it miss the style marks, it lacks interest and has several off qualities in the aroma, flavor, and mouthfeel components. Furthermore, warmth is dramatically unkind and significantly knocked down the scores from the initial impression.
