Dark copper with a light haze, similar to sun-brewed iced tea (SRM 16-18). A meek and translucent bubbly head immediately cowers from one-quarter inch to a thin ring. Spotty lace looks lonely on a Strangebird IIPA glass.
The aroma seems about right with big, fruity citrus against a pinesap backbone. Tangerine, mango, and orange fill the middle. A moderate dose of fresh herbs and light floral notes waft in and out across the session.
The bitterness and sweetness are moderately strong and relatively well balanced. The flavor characteristics are kind of muddy, with citrus and pine. The finish is long and modest.
Alcohol is as expected. There is a mild numbing effect from the bitterness. Light carbonation is almost flat and detracts from the medium to full body and oily texture.
Setting the style guide aside, this is a pleasant and tasty beer. It is clearly intended to be an NEIPA. It either seems to have gone awry, or the brewer was intending to be innovative.
