Pint on draft at Howie's Pub in Portland, Maine, where this is the house beer - $3 a pint!
Appearance: Pours a mostly clear dark amber with a one-finger cream head. Looks like a sturdy red.
Aroma: Pretty faint, but there's a little caramel and grain.
Taste: Very tasty red ale, especially for $3 a pint. Notes of caramel and dark tea, which I always like in a red ale. Reminds me a lot of Smithwick's. Also somewhat reminiscent of Cottrell's Old Yankee, Sebago's Runabout Red and Baxter's Amber Road, which are session ales I like a lot.
Mouthfeel: Good all-seasons depth. Good for a winter day or a summer night. Has body.
Overall: As values go, this is one. A fine beer to sip while watching the Sox get beat at this charming old dive by the highway.
Couple notes - for one, I have no idea what the ABV is on this, but I suspect it's low. I drank this swiftly and felt no buzz. Without having had Geary's "Hudson Red," I suspect they might be the same beer, or at least similar.
