Well, I got into Augsburg around Noon on 30SEP09 and easily found my hotel. After unpacking, it was time for some lunch. What a coincidence! A brewpub not 5 minutes down the street. Hot dog!!
Thorbräu is in a large, grey, stone structure at the end of the street, right near the Wertachbrucker Tor. Under the arches and through the door gets you in. Just ahead and lining the left of the place is a long, dark-wooded bar. Bar-back has many assorted glasses, as well as wine and liquor. It runs about 20 feet towards the rear, along a hallway which in turn leads to a room to the rear left which allows smoking. Further rearwards is a small courtyard, and stairs lead down to the toilets. Back near the entrance, with the bar to your left, the main Stube is on the right, with a second room a bit further back with about 6-8 more tables. About 6 dark-wooded tables and benches dot the first room, and the walls themselves are entirely made of wood. Numerous large windows allow for lots of light to enter. Some old wooden kegs decorate the room, along with pieces of brewing equipment, mugs, bottles, tin placards, etc. Local pop music was playing, otherwise this was a warm, comfy, traditional-style German Lokal.
Service was efficient and helpful, assisting me with getting info from various Thorbräu bottles and supplying me with some coasters. They had at least 8 biers available on this day: kellerbier, schwarzbier, weissbier, leicht weiss, gold, pils, doppelbock and keller weiss. I had the Schwarz, which was solid, and the Doppelbock, which really rocked. My lunch was basic yet well-made: Leberkäse mit Spiegelei und Salat. Despite being in a large city, prices here were very, very acceptable. I stopped here 3 different times in 3 days, so I feel it's well worth a visit.
Zum Wohl!!
