This beer is a special release just for Nowruz (the Persian New Year), which falls on March 20th. I used traditional ingredients that are meaningful to Nowruz to brew this beer – apples, sumac and wheat. This beer was dry hopped with Mosaic hops and it’s a New England style IPA – super hazy, juicy, and refreshing. ABV is right at 6.5%. The cans were designed by a young Iranian woman who lives in D.C., and it’s a very symbolic label specific to the New Year.

Interesting beer company that uses spices and herbs from the Middle East to literally spice things up. Very interesting, but I think the idea works better with a different style, not an IPA. How about a gruit instead and ditch the hops altogether? In this case, the light hop profile and the fairly tame spice blend sort of cancel each other a bit. Seeing sumac in a beer is a great idea though.

Nowruz calls for a spring beer, an IPA of its own. The first day of spring, the equinox the season shift from dark to light.

A: The beer is hazy pale yellow in color - too hazy to see if there is any visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high bright white head that has good retention properties and never completely faded away, also leaving some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of apples are present in the nose along with notes of mango and orange citrus.
T: The taste follows the smell, except that the flavors of orange citrus are stronger than those of the tropical fruit and there also are notes of what I presume to be sumac. Little to no bitterness is perceptible.
M: It feels just about medium-bodied and somewhat juicy on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This IPA is easy to drink and is an interesting take on using ingredients that are meaningful to Nowruz.
