Built for the long cold months of winter, WarPigs is out to prove that sour ale isn't just meant for summer. Chocked full of cranberry, cherry, and black currant, and then with pep of ginger, the ale is just as warming as it is refreshing.
Rushy, hazy and swirling with dark lavender and burnt violet, Wolf's Blizzard casts a dainty neon pink froth and a host of dark berry aromas, red wine, cider and a piquant twinge of sourness. Juicy, sweet and centered around the fruit, the opening taste is generous with fructose, sourdough and hard candy.
As the sourness begins to dominate, its acidity washes away the bulk of juiciness to create a tighter, drier and spicier tartness that brings out the beer's natural red wine, dry cider and citrusy character. But the remnants of those berries remain in a dry cobbler way. As the tartness balances the session, a spice of tannic red wines steers the late taste into a strong vinous direction.
Fuller for sour ale, but medium bodied overall, the ale finishes on a drying track with a brief afterglow of berry pectins, vinous tannin and a spicier sourness for curiosity and intrigue.
