I poured this into a pint glass from a 500 mL (1 pint or 16 oz.) can. Best by date is April 2014.
A-This fine brew poured a 1/2 inch creamy tan head that stuck around for a moment. It dissipated into a creamy ring around the edge of the glass. Not a lot of lace left in the glass. The color was a cloudy dark brown that looked black when held away from certain light. But overall it was nut brown.
S-Definitely a dunkelweizen: a prominent clove smell mixed with some sweet/caramel malt, a trace smell of wheat, cooked yeast, some biscuity grains, wheat, banana and even a slight nutty smell. The clove became more apparent as the beer warmed a bit. It was pleasant!
T-Similar to the nose: a strong clove in the front and backend. Very malt forward. No hops that I could sense. A trace amount of sweet bubblegum (but only so slight), some sweet caramel malt, slow roasted sweet malt, even light molasses and dates. There was a Fig Newton-like flavor as the beer warmed. The aftertaste had a sweet wheat flavor, along with some biscuity goodness! This was an overall sweet and malty brew.
M-It was a little wet with carbonation on the moderate side. Full/medium-bodied and highly drinkable. It was rather refreshing, too. Definitely sessionable. I could easily throw back a couple of pints. Decently smooth.
Overall I would drink this again, especially because I am in China and the local beer selection is filled with cheap adjunct style lagers, boring! So I am lucky they import some German and Belgium beers at certain markets around here. I would buy this in the States if it was available, especially in October. It tastes good as the air is getting much cooler, especially at night. This is a perfect beer to sip while the leaves change outside. It also is fun to drink a smooth Dunkel to celebrate the occasion. Happy Oktoberfest!
Cheers!
