Another number from the Hawkesbury Brewing 5 x 2 pack I picked up at Aldi before Xmas. This is their take on the classic Aussie "Pacific Style" Pale Ale. It's coming in at 3.5%, so classified as a mid-strength here in Australia.
Appearance: Very light looking. Pale, oh so pale Golden colour. Thick frothy white head. Looks like a Pacific ale, but it's very light in colour, completely filtered. There's an ever so slight haze to the beer. A decent amount of carbonation.
Aroma: For a mid-strength beer, it's packing an intense aroma. Strong tropical stone fruit and lemon citrus notes assault the senses. Unripe Mangoes, passionfruit, and sour lemons. Smells like an excellent Pacific Ale. Lingering behind is a faint biscuity malt.
Taste: Follows the noise excellently. Got that classic Tropical flavour, unripe mangoes, fleshy passionfruit and a nice lemony citrus twang. What is lacking in alcohol is made up for in excellent flavour. It's almost on par with Stone and Wood. It's got a good sour bitter kick, and a light malt sweetness just helps balance that sourness.
Feel: Being a Pacific Ale, and coming in at only 3.5%, it's watery as expected and has a thin mouthfeel. However, Pacific Ales are common and popular in Australia for their refreshment value on hot Aussie summer days, so for the style it hits perfectly.
Overall: I've had some decent Pacific Ales, and some not so decent ones. This one is definitely up there with the better ones. At 3.5% it's perfect for a couple after mowing the lawn, or sitting round a BBQ. It's perfect for going fishing and camping.
Considering the swill that the masses drink at midstrength value (XXXX Gold, Great Northern) which are borderline flavourless, this is a cracking midstrength beer, tons of flavour and character, whilst being super dooper sessionable. An excellent drop.
