"Red Lager brewed for to help sustain Monks who partially fasted during Lent. Cherrywood Smoked malt adds a sweet and fruity smoke saturation. Hefty additions of caramel malt add honeyed biscuit sweetness and a stunning deep red color."
More light brown with red highlights than straight up red when poured into a GA branded dimpled 1L stein. Two solid fingers of light tan head.
Nose of wonderfully complex maltiness. Outstanding nose on this beer!
Mouthfeel is medium with limited carbonated influence.
All maltiness on the palate. Undercurrents that I can only describe as complexity, but are probably from the smoked malts and melanoidins. As the maltiness wanes a balancing bitterness appears shortly but only long enough to balance the wonderful body of this beer.
Overall a world class beer. Just as wonderful as it was surprising to me. As an addendum, the only reason that I categorized this as a red beer instead of a smoked beer is that if you're expecting smoke aroma and flavor from this beer, you won't get a lot of it. As I said, it was but a whisper, in my humble opinion.
