Such a tricky grain, there's very few applications of rye in culinary art that seems to make sense. But the brewers at HOB seems to know which ones work well.
Amarillo Rye hits the glass with a light copper, deep golden hue while crowning with a firm white cap. As the scent of citrus, peppery, bread crust and lighter caramel green the nose, the first sip of honey and caramel seem to be the perfect foundation for hop and rye.
With the sweetness fading on the middle palate, the taste soon shifts toward the hops as the taste of pink grapefruit, orange and a hint of pineapple grows beyond the fleeting malts. The lightly husken grit of rye provides a peppery bite to the beer just as the hops trend bitter with pine, fresh grass clippings and bitter resins.
Medium bodied and trending dry, the beer finishes expectedly off-clean because of the rye, but the beer also carries a mild grain-derived astringency to causes some friction on the late palate and aftertaste. Still, its a welcomed beer where the hops and dry easily hide its flaws.
