This modern lager takes its inspiration from the Franconian tradition of Landbier. Deeply rooted in PNW agriculture, this lovely pale beer is the liquid embodiment of our small corner of the world. Utilizing an enhanced decoction mash process, this beer has a beguiling bready malt depth. Not to be outdone by the malt, the hop presence is lighty herbal and highly delectable.

Hops: Crystal & Audacity from the Willamette Valley
Malts: Francin Pils, Steffi Pils, & Elwha River Hulless Spelt Pale from Eastern WA

I had this beer on-tap in a tulip glass at the brewery. It’s not really a märzen, but BA doesn’t have a category for “rustic landbier”.

Appearance: pale golden hue with just a dash of haze and a thick head of frothy ivory foam that leaves a nice lace on the glass.

Smell: moderately sweet with a grainy, slightly astringent character initially, but which develops into a warm, bready, and overall quite nutty malt aroma. Very earthy and interesting. I like it.

Taste: sweetish, malty, and like the aroma, quite nutty. It’s like an earthiness bomb! At the top of the sip, it’s a decent pale lager, but as the palate develops it gets this wonderfully rich and, to me, autumnal character. Bitterness is definitely not low, but it’s a good complement to the nutty, sweet warmth. Great!

Mouthfeel: medium body with a good carbonation and creaminess.

Overall: this is both a very tasty beer, and an unusual style that you don’t see very often, at least not here in the US. So, yeah, overall it’s really good!
