This was another beer that was given to me by a cousin late last year, as I'd never had anything from Hive Beer before. The same could be said for the presence of Independence as it gave this beer an unusual, deep, and unique flavor that kept my attention throughout.
Typical for the style, this had a opaque, honey pour to it with enough head topping it off. Practically no lacing was left behind aside from a few bits of suds near the top of my pint glass. Lots of blueberry, gooseberry, and a hint of spelt were in the nose as the taste was just as dank, heavy-handed, and full of fruit patch and deep outdoors. Juicy, somewhat slick, and full-bodied, this had a bit of a rough feel to it. That was in a good way since the unfiltered nature shone through with hints of rye and grain given this the body needed to round it out.
No date was to be found anywhere on the can and the subdued carbonation let the flavors shine through. A bit of dark sediment floated around in this but never did it feel old or skunked. Lots to enjoy here if you're into American Pale Ales as this wasn't quite like anything that I've had in a while. Worth another go just to get a better handle on it!
