Vintage 2005., bottle #1396.
The colour is deep brown with a tint of wine red. The two finger thick airy head is pale beige and it sinks slowly down leaving some file lacing.
The inviting smell is loaded with roasted malt, raisins, coffee sweets, dried apricots, pumpernickel bread and a hint of red wine. Complex, but at the same time very relaxed and controlled. Maybe it is a little weak for a strong ale.
The taste is very dry and intensive with lots of roasted malt (and therefore, coffee, roasted nuts, cocoa). The flavour develops into a semi-sweet creamy full-bodied almost burned one with some alcohol. The long aftertaste got strong bitter hops and a touch of matured strong wine; it is however dominated by a dry clean roasted note of coffee.
The carbonation is quite strong with rather large bubbles. I think it is a bit too strong, it will probably be fine after a year in the bottle?
An bold and interesting ale from the always interesting micro brewery Slottskällans. When I tried a glass of this at the Stockholm Beer Festival this autumn, the head brewer told me that it still was too young and that he thought it would gain a lot by some more months of maturing. And I must say he were right as this one is much more balanced than the one I had back then.
