The colour is deep yellow; the large white foam sinks down to a firm finger thick head, leaving a beautiful lacing.
The smell is much stronger than what one could expect from a pale lager: Chemical and bitter with notes of sealing wax, mature apples, melting plastic and hints of tar (band aid-style) and vinegar. There is also a sweetish touch from the malt. The character is very American micro brewery.
The taste is similar to the smell. The malt just gives a somewhat sweet and neutral background for all the hops to play around in. The complex taste starts off with an earthy, dry full-bodied flavour with a growing bitterness. Then, some sweetness emerges together with chemical notes of hot plastic, barbequed beef, sweet liquorice and gunpowder. The aftertaste is creamy with salty notes of leather, treacle and nutmeg.
The mouthfeel is very smooth. However, there is plenty of carbonation, but the small bubbles are nice to the mouth. I like that!
Not a beginners lager, I might say. It might even be a bit too hoppy for me!
