The colour is deep brown with a tint of red. The beer pours with a fizzing sound; the low beige head disappears immediately, leaving a thin ring. The beer is unfiltered and bottle conditioned, however I find the liquid almost clear. Some lacing occurs.
The smell is strong with notes of toffee, fruits, candy, yeast and a distinct chocolate flavour.
The taste is not as heavy as I had expected: Notes of chocolate bars, fruits, mild coffee, roasted nuts, raisins and a hint of citric acid. A strong alcoholic flavour dominates the aftertaste. I found some notes of raisins, roasted meat, dried fruits and caramel. The alcohol is gone in the finish, as it is replaced with a light salty flavour of gravy.
The carbonation is mild and gentle; the liquid smooth and a bit thick.
The exaggerated flavours of alcohol and the rather simple taste (for a beer of this strength and style) lower the grade for this beer.
