2006 vintage
A: Dark red-brown, slightly cloudy with a light head.
S: Amazing smell with lots of toffee, dried fruit, and brown sugar.
T: The same things you find in the aroma are present in the flavor. Lots of toffee, dried fruit, and brown sugar, along with some milk chocolate.
M: A well-rounded and full-bodied beer. The relatively high alcohol content (7%) gives it a bit of port in the finish.
D: This beer has definitely benefited from the years in storage. Can I please have another?

August 2005: Bottle, vintage 2001, RBESG 2005, Grand Tasting. Hazy brown colour, malty sweet (far too sweet) flavour. Not a vintage worth remembering.

Vintage 2001, sample 2010-04-10.
A hazy brown beer with a hint of orange. A light beige head, leaving little lacing, but some curtains.
Mostly vinous smell, Madeira, Sherry but also nutty aromas and almond.
The taste is rather sweet, toffee, chocolate, a small sour balance, a hint of salt. A bit stale, can be age related.
Little carbonation, a complex feeling, soft, oily.
This sample reminded much of an old ale, or barley wine. Not unexpected.

2005 vintage
A: Deep brown with a red undertone with a wee head.
S: Spices, Port wine, Grain, Honey.
T: Fruit, Dark bread, Raisin, Molasses, Caramel.
M: Quite thick and very winelike. Very sweet.
Quite a nice sipper for a late winter night. This beer is kind of boozy and spicy when it's fresh but give it a couple of years in your cellar and it'll be a completely different beer. This beer at a very minimum 1 year in the cellar. Vintage version goes highly recommended.

Bottle, Stockholm, Sweden. - A cloudy rustic brown/orange colored beer with a small, filmy white head. Non distinct smells of Belgian yeast and dark red fruits, not the best nose. Flavor is similar to the nose, with Belgian yeast and dark fruits. A bit of harshness and a lack of finesse. Not complex and already oxidized. Really, not the best beer.

330ml bottle bought from Quaffs, London...
Poured a deep russet orange colour with some yeasty floaties.. Lightly tan head poured quite small but thickish then faded to wispy coating with thick edging... no carbonation at all... some very light lacing...
Aroma - Toasted caramel malts, rich and ripe dark fruits (prunes, figs and apples), some Belgian yeastiness, quite spicy - hints of dried ginger and black pepper, toasted bread, light medicinal / anise notes, dark muscavado sugar sweetness, burnt nuttiness, grassy...
Taste Spicy alcohol soaked fruits (oranges, dates, figs and currents), toasted caramel malts, burnt butter, very bready and yeasty, quite noticeable warming alcohol, some salty notes, rich treacle and brown sugar sweetness, light oakiness, some ginger spiciness, quite strong peppery hop bitterness, some rum traces...
Feel - Pretty smooth and creamy... medium / full bodied...the alcohol is pretty prevalant so i probably couldn't drink too many of these in one sitting...
Overall - A very good example of a Belgian Dark Ale although the alcohol is maybe a little on the harsh side.... definitely worth a try though...

The colour is dark brown; the liquid is cloudy. There is almost no foam at all, just some tiny beige bubbles.
The smell is complex and sweet. I noticed flavours like yeast, toffee, diacetyl, brown sugar (lots of it), lactose and sweet almonds. I didnt find any bitterness at all.
The carbonation is rather strong with plenty of small bubbles, giving it a foaming mouthfeel. A peculiar bottle-fermented beer, I might say.
The smell is overall sweet with notes of mild malt, brown sugar, candy sugar, some alcohol, soured milk, herbs and minerals (iron). The taste is very well balanced, but the body is surprisingly weak. The aftertaste is sweet with sweet flavours of brown sugar, treacle and cooked vegetables (cabbage). The finish is rather dry.
A very well crafted and different beer, but a bit too carbonated and sweet for me.

Ambiguous ruby to almost brown color, the head modest in size, somewhat creamy in its consistency with a fine coating of lace and both are beige in color. Nose is malt, over ripe plum like sweetness and just a tad sour. Front is malt and ambrosial with a slender top. The finish is meaningfully hopped, sparsely carbonated and the aftertaste dry and a touch bitter.
Not sure if this is an aged version, but does seem so and with the high ABV, tends to Warm The Tummy and the slight bitter alcohol taste, actually adds another dimension to this beer.

Perhaps my favourite from this brewer. Fruity port-like flavour in the nose and on the palate, sweetish start, medium bitterness, drying out toward the finish. Nice salty finish aswell, slightly acidic, quite unique i think, different, very enjoyable.
