The colour is very black (120 EBC), the liquid is clear (I think). The finger thick head slowly sinks down leaving some lacing.
The smell is very bitter with citric flavours, mostly lemon and grape fruit. Roasted hints of coffee, chocolate and grilled meats. Potent and balanced.
The taste is dry and bitter like an American DIPA, lots of grapefruits and lemon peels. Some salty hints of grilled meat and liquorice. The body is surprisingly light. The aftertaste is balanced with fresh bitter flavours, lime, bitter oranges and salt liquorice. The long-lasting aftertaste is bitter and fresh.
The carbonation is medium strong, the small bubbles short-lived. The liquid is mid-smooth.
This is how a black IPA should be: Bitter with some toasted flavours, not roasted like a stout. Well done.
