From what I gather, this is a seasonal brewpub that opens in early May and closes at the end of October, dates which roughly correspond to tourist season in the Black Hills.

They're in the dead center of Hill City's main drag, and anyone coming through town is bound to spot the garrish, though obligatory, mural of Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, and Roosevelt sharing pints. I stopped by after a long (too-long) bike ride in the Black Hills and needed some good brew and food to ease my sore quads.

Save a few families from out of town, this place was more or less empty, which made me wonder whether they have any local customer base at all or purely depend on tourist dollars. I guess the proof is in the pudding, given what I saw that night and the pack-it-up business plan come end of RV season.

They only had four of their own beers on tap (Washington Wheat, Rough RIder Red, Dirt Politics Double Black, and a fourth which I can't remember), so I ordered the three-beer sampler and an individual fourth in order to taste the full gamut of offerings.

Surprisingly, the brews were all above-average; nothing in the four star range, but they're putting out well-balanced, if slightly sweet, beers that were true-to-style across the board. Along with a bowl of the buffalo chili (many of the menu options were buffalo), I enjoyed a full meal with good beer for under $10.

The owners/designers/decorators/brewers must recognize that their customer-base is coming from all over the Midwest and enjoys their own local craftbeers even when traveling to exotic places like South Dakota, so they've outfitted their bar with a wide selection of microbrews from across the Midwest: Leinie's to Boulevard and even some of the mountain breweries like Snake River and Yellowstone Valley.

Similarly, the whole place is decked out with beer memorabilia from these other craftbrewers, including the wall paper in the bathroom. I liked the ambience that this created: a nice homage to the beers from the places that most of the customers come from made this have a nice homey feel.

If, per chance, I'm ever biking or climbing in the Black Hills again, this place will definitely be worth a second look.

Written From Notes Compiled 6/04-8/04:
Small, old storefront about 20 feet wide at it's maximum. Only 4 specialty beers, and I heard that the brewpub is shutdown, and there is no brewer. I have the feeling that their brews are contract brewed, and If I had to guess it'd probably be Gluek. Service is ok, not much info on the beer, fairly fast, though. The restaurant is decorated with old random Mt. Rushmore area antiques. Samplers come in 3's or 5's, but they only had 4 in house beers, doesn't make much sense. So I got a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale sample, and it was better than any of the other offerings. Food is good, lots of buffalo choices, I like the Buffalo Philly, or the Buffalo Burger.
