Well, this one didn’t make it into the Kölsch appreciation thread, due to timing. And just as well. My expectations were somewhat more tempered than Charles Dickens’s were for Pip. And as it turned out, justly so. I get the pun on the name of the nearby Finger Lake, but what is the relevance to this beer? It is certainly no Titan of a lake, or even a Great Lake for that matter. Sure, it’s a nice lake, a good lake but by nooooo means is it a GREAT LAKE. And so it is for this beer, it's good, just good/ok.

Ok. On with the review…

If one is watching closely, inside this double walled pint glass, one will witness the brief appearance of an off-white head that reaches for greatness only to collapse immediately after achieving 1.5”. The rocky head crashes so fast that it neglects its duty toward leaving lace. Only a sad little thread bear blanket remains of its earlier aspersions. The beer is not cranberry colored, no, it is most decidedly copper (SRM 10-12), and clear, at least until the bottom of the can was added. Lots of impotent carbonation scurries about, all pomp and no circumstances.

Oh boy! It’s not getting any better folks. The aroma is dominated by blandness, I mean, dry hay? Really? Well, to be fair, there is some soap tossed in for character. But what about the grain, or even those inappropriate cranberries? Nada! Talk about Inauspicious Beginnings.

Mild sweetness cooperates with mild bitterness. The cranberries are definitely here, unlike the aroma. And the cranberries do actually work well as an adjunct. Actually, they save the beer, because without them this would be very bland indeed. The finish is dry and mild, almost faint as it lingers.

It is crisp, it does have a medium to light body, it has the stiff texture to fine nylon. Alcohol is where it belongs, and it is well carbonated. Even if that carbonation is all pomp.

Ok, maybe my hopes for this beer were unfulfilled. A fruited Kolsch does have potential, even if that just seems wrong. My experience with Empire has a checkered past, and this falls squarely in the middle. Not a crushable beer, but I get it, some beers are made for people who prefer a light alcohol splash. I mean, after all, isn’t that why hard seltzer exists?

Pours a cloudy gold. Thick foam. Cranberry aroma. Bitter cranberry body. Mild sour finish. Not bad if you like the style.
