collaboration with the new modest, which is where i had it on tap, they dont have their own beers quite up and running yet, so cool idea to do collabs around town and get the doors open. this is a solid red ale, somewhat unexciting at first but sturdy and good, thats red ale in general i guess, most of the time anyway, and this does open into some nice malt complexity. i like the darker brick red color and the low end on this, some deeper grain here for sure, even a little roast to this, i think they did a nice job building layers, and its not sweet like some of these can be. pretty good clarity on my pour, high beige head, airy and wispy looking, good carbonation. aroma of almond and chestnut and to me quite autumnal, some balancing hops here also adding freshness, but this is about the grain for sure, baked warmth, a little maple and molasses without running sugary, some ale yeast personality too which i like in the style, toasty and cozy, but also with a crispness of sorts, nice and fresh too. the flavor is similar, nutty and with some black tea and light cocoa character, more nuance and low end than we often seen in a basic red type, this is fuller feeling too, long without back end sweetness, some doughy fermentation character, hazelnut and raisin, trail mix vibes, and it sort of does have its own personality distinct from the style baseline, which i appreciate. some orange zest and light pine to the hops, but its quick, not pushing into hoppy red range at all, trace smoke and cocoa nib late, round and smooth to drink, rushing carbonation, perhaps a touch filling to drink a ton of, but i like the weight this carries. flavorful take on the style, curious to see where modest takes it all from here, but this is a sensible start and the beer is quality.
