Holy Goat’s 180 Shilling is a strong and sweet barleywine.

Brewed in collaboration with Newbarns, Holy Goat made this take on a traditional Scottish ale using a double/reiterated mash. This 17th century brewing technique utilises the runoff wort from one mash, as the liquor for a second.

This effectively concentrates the wort, allowing the production of a very strong beer without the use of additional sugars (though HG did also add sugars here). They used a historically inspired recipe utilising Chevallier malt along with heritage crystal and No. 2 invert sugar, ingredients typically used in beers of this calibre in the late 1800s.

Copenhagen 25/3 2025. 44 cl can from The Beer Hive, Amagerbrogade, Kbh. S. Drawing of a happy Skeleton guzzling beer on the somber can.

Pours slightly unclear mahogany with a mid-sized off-white head. Bubbly. Disappears fairly fast leaving a solemn dark fluid behind. No lacing.

Aroma is medium intense with a sweet sugary odor of boozy liqueur mingling with a bit of sourish grains and alcohol. Brown sugar, decayed fermented Plums, toffee and linoleum. Dark and very sweet.

Light carbonation. Medium thick. oily, sticky, soft, slightly viscous, almost flat texture.

Flavor is intense with a heavy sweetness followed by a more subdued bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet and sugary with a notable bitter undertone. Lingering. Finish is semi-dry and a bit sticky.

Potent and very sweet Scottish Barleywine.
