Allegheny River Fog – from Trails to Ales Brewing. Single 16 oz can. In reefer at Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA. Acquired 22/09/23, $ 3.50 (Including tax), $ 0.219/fl oz. Reviewed 28/09/23 (Review 3158). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Undated can. Stored at 34 degrees at home. Served at 43.5 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 52.8 degrees F.
Appearance – 3.5.
First pour – Pale Straw (SRM 3), clear.
Body – Gold (SRM 7), opaque. Under direct light, gold and hazy. When rear-lite, gold, and glowing.
Head: Average (Maximum 3 cm, aggressive center pour), white, high density. Reduces to a rough two cm irregular crown with a torn edge and a rocky partial cap. Pieces of lacing remain on the glass.
Lacing – Excellent! Degenerating into torn curtains – mostly various size tiny to small bubbles with strings and islands.
Aroma – 3.5 – Distinctly hoppy with some light tropical aromas. No yeast, no malt. No ethanol (5.8 % ABV according to the label).
Flavor – 3.5 – Begins with a light tropical fruity hoppy bitterness, essentially following the nose. No yeast, no malt. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. No gastric warming. Ends with a chalky dryness.
Palate – 3.25 – Medium; watery; soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: (After deducting 0.25 point for undated can) 3.25 Much less hazy than the typical NEIPA – should just be an American IPA. The brewer has upped their game since they’ve moved the brewing a couple of blocks off-site – definitely getting better!
