Mudpuppy Stout – from Trails to Ales Brewing. Single 16 oz can. In reefer at Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA. Acquired 22/09/23, $ 3.50 (Including tax), $ 0.219/fl oz. Reviewed 29/09/23 (Review 3159). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Undated can. Stored at 34 degrees at home. Served at 49.2 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 54.8 degrees F.
Appearance – 3.5.
First pour – Deep Amber (SRM 15), clear.
Body – Ruby Brown (SRM 24), opaque. Under direct light, same. When rear-lite, gold, light penetration slightly beyond the edges, ruby.
Head: Average (Maximum 4 cm, aggressive center pour), tan, high density with a rocky top. Reduces to a thing ring of bubbles, leaving neither crown nor cap.
Lacing – None.
Aroma – 4 – Distinctly chocolate/roasted malt. No yeast, no hops. No ethanol (5.5 % ABV according to the label).
Flavor – 3.5 – Bitter chocolate, essentially following the nose. No yeast, no hops. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. No gastric warming.
Palate – 3.25 – Medium; watery with a slightly oily mouthfeel; weak carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.5 (After deducting 0.25 point for undated can) Distinctly lacks the sweetness expected from the advertised milk chocolate. Otherwise, decent stout.
