This is a place that I have visited many times, over many years, and it never seems to alter.
Originally a 19th Century brew-pub, it recommenced brewing in 1982, about 4 years before I discovered it. Set about 90% up the side of a seriously f**king steep hill - as a Hiker myself, I can tell you that only the brave tackle this one from the bottom. A public bus service runs from the nearby town of Huddersfield, though beware there are 3 route numbers; 2 run to the bottom of the hill & only 1 runs to the top. A 5-minute wait for the one that runs to the top is well worth it believe me!!
A thick walled stone building that dates from the early 1800s, the Sair Inn is fabricated to withstand cold English Winters & isolation. Even as far back as 1986 when I first visited, it had an impressive array of beers, initially it was 8 plus a home-made Cider; now it is something like 10 plus a traditional West Country Cider. Anyone who accomplished a Pint of all 8 got the ninth free, I am proud to say I accomplished this twice. As you enter there is what seems like a myriad of rooms off to the left & right, each with its own open Real Fire. The bar is to your right as you enter, festooned with Handpumps. On a nice Summers day go outside & admire the breathtaking view of the Colne Valley. It has everything; Real Fires, Family Room, Quiet Room, No-Smoking Room, Outdoor Drinking Area, Trad. Pub Games, Real Cider & Cask Marque Accreditation. Phew, did I miss anything? Oh yeah, no food they do sell Seabrook Crisps though.
My latest visit revealed that the Brewery had been completely upgraded & a full-time brewer employed. This allowed the owner & original Brewer, Ron Crabtree, more time. I can tell you this Ron Crabtree is "knocking on", but no shrinking violet, & if he is behind the Bar on your visit you are in for a treat!
The Dark Mild & English Guineas Stout are suitable for Vegetarians, Vegans & visiting Aliens from the Planet Fussy, as they do not contain Isinglass finings. So there!
A place that has been in existence for over 20 years, but rose to prominence in 1997 after it won CAMRAs National Pub of the Year! Awards aside, this is a real personal favorite of mine, probably more because of the long association with great homebrewed beer & happy memories, more than anything else.
One of the "old school" of the UKs true BrewPubs.
Well worth a visit can you do a Pint of each of the Beers on offer?
Go On, have a Go!!
