Altbier falls into a class of its own, mainly because is not a lager or an ale- it was how the locals made beer (using herbs and spices before hops came about) in the area of Düsseldorf, Germany. This unique beer starts out as an Ale, but then uses the fermenting process of a lager to create a one of a kind brew that isn't attempted by many small craft breweries. It starts with a rich malt flavor then finishes with smooth citrus floral notes from the hops.
