Purchased at Casterton IGA in Casterton, Australia.

This beer is part of the growing Australian mid-strength segment. Equivalent to one standard drink, it's aimed at people who need to drive, or who want a beer without the alcohol and carb kick. Australia's strict drink driving laws make this type of beer a sensible option if any type of automobile is entering the mix.

The beer pours a clear and bright golden yellow. There's a thin, persistent, bright white head.

On the nose it's neutral, with some slight citrusy hops, opening up to some sweet mandarin and orange as it warms.

The taste is initially quite neutral - there are mild hoppy notes and some crackery malt with a bit of yeast. As with the aroma, however, it opens up as it warms and becomes more citrusy and becomes quite an enjoyable beer.

Mouthfeel is thin and carbonation is pushing medium to high. There's definite prickling on the tongue after the swallow.

The issue I have is that most people drinking a 3.5% pale ale aren't going to wait for the highlights to emerge. The thin body that's usual for these types of beers also doesn't lend itself to the type of contemplation that gets to the point where the flavours are becoming more expressive, unless a beer geek is hunched over the glass.

The other point to make is that if this beer is being compared to the market leader (a certain mid-strength beer is Australia's best-selling beer) it's clearly superior in almost every way, and should be a no-brainer option for even the most hide-bound macro drinker when confronted with the choice. But that's not going to happen, which is a pity...

Cheers!
