Purchased in April 2022 at Casterton in Victoria, and drunk in August that year.
This beer pours a clear - way too clear for a hefeweizen - lemony yellow. The initially large and to-style head disappears very quickly. So while this beer looks nice in the glass, it doesn't tick any of the expected boxes for a hefe. If I didn't know this was a small craft brewery I'd suspect they'd filtered the beer. I've marked it down accordingly.
The aroma is strongly yeast and lemon; again that's not what I expect. It smells more like a Saison or Belgian Golden Ale than a wheat beer. There's none of the expected clove, bubblegum or soft, wheat aroma. Again, I've marked it down.
Tastewise it's back on track. There's an initial tangy lomonyness but there's a clear clovey vibe in there as well. There's bubblegum, yeast and a soft wheat and malt background. There's a long, fruity and yeasty aftertaste. The beer is actually really nice when assessed on taste alone.
Mouthfeel is medium-high on carbonation, which is fine, but lacks the fluffiness expected from the hazy, head-laden beer I expected.
Overall I'm torn on rating this one. I am trying to do it to style, and since the beer misses the mark by quite a bit on appearance, nose and mouthfeel, I've marked it down. But who am I to say that this beer isn't exactly what the brewer intended to put in my glass? Beer ratings are subjective but also linked to established criteria. The Beer Police might not arrest me if I didn't rate to style, but I'm going to do it anyway!
Cheers!
