Being an innovator, Alvinne took that old style and stretched it
into all possible directions. Alvinne expanded the old Flemish
Brown style towards Flemish Sours Ales and made a style on their own, not limited anymore towards
anything but mixed fermentation with Morpheus yeast and brewed in the historical area of the great mixed fermentation beers. Their mission: brewing the best (wood aged) sour (fruit) ales in the world, using the mixed fermentation technique. Today, we can celebrate that the Morpheus Yeast saga started 10 years ago. There simply isn’t a better way to do that by creating an new iconic beer:

The Sour’ire De Mortagne (“sourire” is french for “smile”). And it makes you smile indeed! Sour Quadrupel aged on red wine barrels, fermented with our own wild house yeast strain 'Morpheus'.

Copenhagen 15/6 2019. 33 cl bottle from Mikkeller Web-shop-Simple yellow and brown label 1970 style with the bare minimum of information (ABV, basic ingredient without much detail and their logo which looks like the logo from a German Sparkasse).

Pours murky dark brown with a very small white head. Disappears fairly fast leaving only a thin remnant of foam. No lacing.

Aroma is potent, sour and with a strong scent of alcohol. Unripe berries, green apples. Sharp. Some sweet dark fruits and oak rummaging in the background with a solid sweet, fermented base. Vinous boozy odor of alcohol. Notable funky notes.

Light carbonation. Thin, oily, texture.

Flavor is medium sweet followed by a stronger sourness. Aftertaste is vinous, sour and sharp. Lightened by a subtle sweet undercurrent. Dry finish.

Fine combination of the sweet quadruple and the funky, sour, white vinous quality. and with a healthy kick.

BBE 9/22. 33cl

Look: Pours a reddish dark brown with a large-pored head that dissipates quickly without leaving any lacing. Some floaters visible.

Smell: Red wine, sour cherry, apple and speculoos biscuit. Acidic, oaky and fruity. Slightly alcoholic.

Taste: Sour cherry, apple and red grapes. Even some hints of ripe red nectarines. Very sour at first with some sweet fruity notes popping up as the beer warms.

Feel: Juicy and vinous. Sharp with a surprisingly smooth finish. Almost no carbonation at all.

Overall: Modern interpretation of a classic Belgian beer style. The overall tartness is nicely balanced by a complex fruity sweetness paired with some woody oak notes. Its 11% ABV are very well hidden. Would benefit from a higher carbonation. Still a great beer!

L: Murky brown color, half finger white head, thin lacing, no visible carbonation.

S: Sour, green apples.

T: Sour, tons of vinegar, green apples. Strong stuff.

F: Full bodied, tons of flavor, very hard to drink due to extreme acidity.

O: An extreme example of sour beer full of vinegar. It's quite decent as an extremely slow sipper, perhaps combining with lamb or pork.

Bottle: Poured a dark reddish color ale with a large dark reddish color foamy head with good retention and light lacing. Aroma of tart notes with some oak notes with light Brett notes is enjoyable. Taste is a nice mix of tart notes with cherry and oak with very subtle acidic notes and light Brett/funky notes are also noticeable. Body is about average with good carbonation. Very enjoyable with some strong resemblance to a Flanders Red.

Pours a murky reddish orange.

Taste is very tart, with sour cherries and oak leading the way.

Taste is tart, almost sour. Cherries, oak and raspberry jam and a nice acidity. Pretty complex.

Mouthfeel is medium, well carbonated

Overall, a very nice sour that hides the ABV almost too well.

In its ruby body this Flander red ale is fizzy and vivid.

Slightly sour the aroma shows a citrusy tartness, some caramelized grains and berries characteristics are noted. It smells like a toffee flanders red ale.

Quite sour, the flavors are big with a lot.of citrus, mostly lime and lemon. The caramelized grains are there too.

The carbonation is less important than the look could suggest, slightly syrupy

O - once again a great sour from Alvinne but not their best offering

-Aged in Wine barrels.

A: Beautiful dark ruby coloring has a thin whispy peanut shell colored head that quickly dissipates. Floating atop are some nice yeast chunks, courtesy of a nice vigorous swirl and pour. Scattered lacing on the vessel. Overall a very nice coloring is pleasing.

S: Softly soured peach aroma, with some red wine like aroma. Some fresh apple slices and oranges with no signs of alcohol from its 11.0%abv. Aroma strength was fairly soft.

T: Creamy sourness of sour green apples and peaches. Some fruitiness, cherries, and red grapes. Sharp acidity of red wine, some sour orange and oaky woodiness.

M: Creamy fullness on the mouthful, nice acidic bite, soft and silky nature. No carbonation adds to its smoothness. Tart with some vinegar bite.

O: Overall the flavor defines this drink with a beautiful red-wine flair and acidity. Beautiful silky sourness of apples and peaches. Big bite of acidity, creamy full body and outstanding per style.

an incredibly interesting beer, although not my favorite from alvinne to date. its a sour quad, which is interesting in and of itself, but this is so much more than that too. it has woody notes, a smoked quality, dried plum and fig and raisin notes, and enough bacterial acidity to cut through the body of the base beer, not as malty as i usually think of when i think quad. there is also very little belgian anything to this, it doesnt seem to have that sugar spike, grain richness, or any of the classic belgian yeast fruitiness. instead its a lemony lactic sourness and some musty woody funk, weirdly wild like a lot of the alvinne stuff, but tempered a bit by the heft of the grain and this curious smoke element like a freshly extinguished campfire. i get light red wine and cherry tones to this, and a bran muffin sort of cakey quality as well. its complex as can be, and the alcohol is extremely well hidden, this doesnt drink nearly as strong as it is listed here, and seems almost thin because of how sour it is. tasty beer, identifiable as alvinne from the yeast for sure, maybe a bit overly sour to appreciate fully the base quad, but a really different and enjoyable glass of beer...
