Not a novelty or another why-did-they-bother chili beer... Subtly spiced and felt more than tasted, at least after a time. That little bit of accumulated heat worked well to elongate the other flavors, led by slight lactic sourness early in the mouth, a raisin and toffee sort of malt structure, and a toast and caramel flavor imparted, I would guess, from the barrel finish. Working out of order, I should mention that, on opening, a foam tsunami surged out and left several small tasting glasses (shared among a group) mainly of brown-beige foam, but it quickly settled over a coffee-like, glinting body, not as leggy as I anticipated. The nose was more barrel than anything else, toasty with a mellow wood smell. For such a rich tasting beer, the feel wasn't too filling, although a bit sticky.
