At the brewery, poured into a pint glass.
This winter warmer was lighter than I was expecting, showing a dark brown color with red hues. There was a thin head, but some sticky lacing accumulated about the glass. The beer was mostly opaque but I could see lots of carbonation working its way through the liquid.
As a fan of winter warmers, I was expecting an intense nose, but only got some sweet malt, slight hops, wintry spices and other sweet notes.
The taste was a bit of an improvement, as the sweet malt remained, as did the wintry spices, but some vanilla, toffee and bread found their way onto my palate. Bitter, grassy hops weaved through also.
Perhaps I'm still tasting the delicious Mother Road Winter Warmer I had a few weeks back, but I was expecting a thick, creamy monster. This beer was creamy, but on the lighter side with a thinner body. Though slightly sweet, I was also surprised by the level of hops and the dry bitter finish, as opposed to a sweeter, maltier finish. This may be truer to the English winter warmer style, but I really should sit down and try a number of them for reference.
Overall, I'd call this a good beer, but not the most memorable of Winter Warmers I've had. I'd like more character outside of the hoppy profile.
