Purchased at King River Brewing in the King Valley in regional Victoria, Australia, in February 2022. The beer is listed as a Belgian Golden Strong Ale, which is not an option for style choice on BA.
The beer pours a beautiful bright, golden, pear-coloured yellow. It is crystal clear in the glass. There's a foamy, bright white head.
The aroma has apple juice, pears, yeast, booze and cloves. The orchard fruits dominate, and my first thought was stressed yeast, but the aroma perfectly complements the spicy yeast and booze so I suspect it's exactly as designed.
The flavour largely follows the nose. The traditional spicy Belgian yeast profile is clear, as are the orchard fruits, with some added lemon as well as the cloves.
The beer is smooth in the mouth, with medium carbonation and a lovely lingering warmth after the swallow.
Overall, this is a fantastic beer, that hides its alcohol well and definitely deserves a second look. At 8.8% ABV that's a dangerous thing, but there are worse things that get you in Australia, so I think I'll have that second one after all!
Cheers
