Sampled on tap at Beach House Brewery 2-22-04 in a pint glass

Served somewhat cold, came with virtually no head. Color was deep brown, a little orangish. Hazy. Looked thick. Sweet malt smell with hint of spice or clove.

Initial taste... was a bit masked by the fizziness, but starts with a sweet malty taste, lots of caramel, some burnt character, not so much the toffee as was advertised. Belgian yeast character comes in the middle, with some clove and that hard-to-describe Belgian ale fruity character. Hops are mild. Alcohol appears low, or is very subtle. Very drinkable, not sure if it's quite a Belgian Strong, but a nice intro to Belgians by newbies.

2-24-04 retasted The Beast. Struck me more like a hefeweizen with caramel and toffee (and the colors to go with them). Much less interesting the second time around.

Tap @ San Diego Beer Fest. Pour is dark copper with a light cream-colored head. Aroma is spiced fruits and yeast. Taste is very smooth. Toffee and malt are big, with a back of the advertised nutmeg and spice. Nice balance, good sweetness without being syrupy or overbearing. Neat little beer.
