The Russian imperial stout dates from the 18th century when it was brewed for export to Tzarina Catherine the Great. To survive the harsh Baltic journey the beer boasts tremendous alcohol and high hopping rates which only come into balance after some aging. With Gnarly Stoat we have smoothed out this initial harshness with late addition black malts and careful sparging. Higher than typical fermentation temperatures create a large bouquet of phenols which age marvelously into notes of chocolate, coffee, and tobacco. This beer is aged under pressure before being packaged and bottle-aged. A pitch black beer with a powerful aroma, Gnarly Stoat should be sipped from a large tulip glass and enjoyed in a relaxed manner after dinner.
Appearance: Black as pitch with a gentle foaming head. Aroma: Dark roasted malts with hints of tobacco and espresso. Body: A rich full malt body contrasted with clean hop bitterness. Texture: Rich malt and herbal bitterness. Finish: Rich caramel and roast with warming alcoho
